Carrington - a workshop Dora Carrington (1893-1932) was a talented and mercurial artist, a member of the Bloomsbury group who caught the imagination of a number of authors including D H Lawrence, Aldouc Huxley and Rosamund Lehmannn. The film we will watch and discuss focussed on the relationship between Carrington and the homosexual writer, Lytton Strachey and the comlex web of other relationhsips in which they were involved. After viewing the film and a general discussion and analysis, we will look at the pattern of their attachement in a clinical context aa well as the dynamics of the attraction that drew others to them- often with destructive results. The film was made in 1995 and directed by Christopher Hampton. Carrington is played by Emma Thompson and Strachey by Jonathan Pryce. The film won the special jury prize at Cannes 1996. The workshop will be facilitated by Rosemay Pitt who is a BACP senior registered therapist and supervisor. She is head of counselling at the University of Winchester and has a background in lecturing Literature. She has a special interest in the Bloomsbury group and lived in Mark Gertler's studio in Hampstead for some years. (Saturday 13th June, 1pm shared lunch, 2pm the movie begins, to be held at Christchurch, Chichester) |

Forgetting to pay symbolises clients aggressive behaviour. |
|
How many types of aggression have you experienced in the counsultng room at the hands of a client? Swearing, abusive language, recollection of violent dreams, verbal threats to cause harm to others, and forgetting to pay are all behaviours that could be interpreted as 'aggressive'. How do we as counsellors and therapists survive the client's attack? On Saturday 21st March, Carol Jones, a psychotherapist, supervisor and member of the Solent group, shared with those present her thoughts on how to work constructively with aggression in the consulting room. Fundamentally Carol spoke of the need to accept the aggression without retaliation but not without discussion. She felt that is important to bring the unconscious urges into the conscious realm by naming and interpreting the behaviour/feelings. This process, sensitively handled allows the client to work through their experiences in a climate of trust; allowing the client to begin to take responsibility for their behaviour and to explore the possibility of using their aggressive feelings creatively to assert themselves in a more appropriate manner. Carol refered to the work of Winnicott who identified that the infant's earliest experiences of aggression are felt whilst maturing in the womb, for example kicking the feet is a means of exploring the 'me' and the 'not me' in the immediate environment. Carol is a regular attendee of the Solent group meetings and would be happy to follow up any further queries that you may have. |
